COMPETITION 2011
RULES AND ENTRY GUIDELINES
PURPOSE
By way of constructive critique, photographs will be studied, scored, and suggestions for improvement made, with the goal of improving the photographic skills of members and expanding the opportunities into the digital realm, all done in an atmosphere of friendly competition.
GENERAL
1. There are six competitions in each calendar year.
a. The first five are held on the third Thursday of “even numbered” months (i.e., February, April, June, August, and October).
b. The sixth and final competition will be held on the second Thursday of December and will consist of photographs shown in the five preliminary competitions only.
2. Each member will be assigned a “competition number”, to be placed on the entry forms and valid for all competitions.
3. The following rules apply to all entries.
a. Entries submitted must be by members in good standing.
b. Entries must be the original photo-based work of the competitor.
c. All negatives, slides and digital images must have been photographed within 5 years before the competition date.
At least one image must have been shot in the last 6 months, one image may be up to 2 years old and only one can be up to 5 years old.
d. Each competitor may enter up to three (3) images per competition.
e. Digital images converted to slides and slides converted to digital images are allowed as long as they have been taken within the 5-year time frame.
f. All entries and their appropriate entry forms must be presented to the coordinator no later than 15 minutes before the start of the competition.
g. Member’s slides and CDs will be handled with reasonable care, however the Club is not responsible for loss or damage to the member’s entries.
h. Please be sure to put your name on all CDs and Flash Drives sumbitted.
i. Please come 15 minutes early to sumbit images.
CATEGORIES
There will no longer be a General Catagory “A” & “B”
LEVELS
There will no longer be 2 Levels A & B. All competition entries will be on the same level
Digital Images
1. Images should be submitted on a Flash Drive or CD in jpeg form, in sRGB color space. Minimum size is 1024 x 768 pixels;
Maximum sixe is 1800 pixels on the longest side
2. Files should be labeled A,B,&C followed by the photographer’s 3-digit competition number.
For example, Competitor number 099 would number 3 images as: A099.jpg, B099.jpg, C099.jpg.
3. Competition paper entry forms identifying the image titles and the photographer will still be required.
JUDGING
1. Judges will be selected by the Competition Chairman and may be a single individual from outside of the Club membership or a panel of three Camera Club members.
2. Titles will be announced to the Judge(s) as the images are presented.
3. Judges will be asked to award from three (3) to nine (9) points to each entry, with allowances for half points when deemed necessary.
4. When a panel of three Camera Club members is used as Judges, each Judge will score (without knowing the other Judges scores) and then the three scores will be totaled and averaged for a single score within the 3-9 point range.
5. Criteria for judging will be based on Technique, Composition and Impact.
a. Technique – the technical aspects such as focus, exposure, depth of field, quality of print/presentation (1-3 points)
b. Composition – the arrangement of objects within the format (1-3 points)
c. Impact – the “gee whiz” factor or how it affects the viewer (1-3 points)
6. At the Final Competition, the Judge(s) will select the following.
a. "Image of the Year"
b. "Runner-up Image of the Year"
AWARDS
At the first General Meeting of the new calendar year the following prizes will be awarded to the winners mentioned above:
1. "Image of the Year"
2. "Runner-up Image of the Year"
3. In addition, awards will be given for
the Highest Average Scores inclusive of all categories as follows:
1. First Place
2. Second Place
3. Third Place
4. Honorable Mention
5. Member's Choice Awards
To determine High Point Average placement, all scores for a Competitor, including the final competition, will be totaled and divided by the number of entries. The purpose of this calculation is to reflect the maker’s photographic skill, not the total number of entries. To be considered for High Point Average the competitor must have had at least twelve (12) entries.
